Profile and Mission

As a collection-based museum within the Faculty of Sciences (MNF) at the University of Zurich, the NMZ aims to fulfil the following roles: 

• Connecting nature, science and society:
  The NMZ brings people closer to nature and the natural sciences, sparking curiosity and critical thinking through engaging exhibitions rooted in university research and collections. 
• Strengthening trust in science:
  By opening a window into how science works, the museum promotes understanding and confidence in research, offering impartial, evidence-based information supported by authentic specimens. 
• Creating meaningful experiences and supporting well-being:
  The NMZ offers an inclusive space for learning, discovery and shared experiences that enrich visitors of all ages and contribute to their sense of connection and well-being. 
• Preserving and sharing natural history collections:
  The museum safeguards diverse faunal and floral collections and makes them accessible for teaching, research and public education. 
• Enhancing Zurich’s cultural appeal:
  With its nationally recognized programs and exhibitions, the NMZ strengthens Zurich’s role as a vibrant center for culture, science, and education for local and international audiences.
